More from Gail

Even mysterious events and robbery can’t stop the fun, laughs and romance that follow after New York stock broker Philip Wells crashes his car into Eve Castleberry’s beauty shop.

Hair Calamities and Hot Cash is a contemporary romance with mystery and comical scenes about a New Yorker and a lonely, young widow in the North Carolina Mountains who fall for each other amid a crisis, danger and suspense.

The story behind Hair Calamities and Hot Cash began many years ago in a small town at the foothills of the North Carolina Mountains, where my mother ran a beauty shop.

Her salon doubled as a meeting place where customers who knew each other discussed how to make the latest recipe, what to do about world affairs and everything in between, including family relations, births, deaths and weddings. Clients planned showers, graduation parties and get-togethers for new neighbors while hair flew.

Mostly townspeople showed up, and the spirit of the community overflowed. The residents had disagreements, but they didn’t abhor those who thought differently from them. They had close friends, acquaintances, people they tolerated and those they kept at a distance. As in most small environments, they gossiped and could be nosey. However, when someone grieved for a loved one, suffered from an illness or any other crisis, prayers went up and casseroles went out no matter whether the person was a best friend or someone held at a distance. They all were God’s children.

e walls of Mother’s beauty shop echoed the spirit of the community, and I wanted to bring it back. I set the mystery, romance and shenanigans in the Western North Carolina Mountains. Many years ago, a friend my father knew in college came to visit us, and we drove him to the mountains. He said, “I’ve traveled the world over, and I’ve never seen a place any prettier than these hills.” I wanted to share the awe-inspiring scenery. I believe we need those peaceful surroundings and the sense of community now more than when I wrote the book.

Interview with Gail

Hi Gail! How did you get started in writing?

I’ve written stories for as long as I can remember, but I didn’t think about it seriously until I took a course in professional writing in college. Then I learned I could make a living working on a newspaper, a magazine or in an advertising department. After I graduated, I worked for a trade publication then in a public relations department handling press releases and contributing to the company magazine and weekly inhouse newspaper. After I married, I helped my husband with his business and wrote freelance articles. Lots of these pieces featured people, who many times returned my calls for an interview and opted to hold it right then over the phone. As a result, I often ended up cooking while I asked them questions and wrote down their answers. This worked like a breeze for certain tasks, such as stirring gravy, but others required more dexterity. All the while I wanted to write fiction, but I believed I didn’t have time, so I didn’t attempt it until my husband semi-retired and my daughter graduated from high school. About five years afterward, I joined American Christian Fiction Writers and started to learn about writing novels.

What is one thing you hope readers will take away from your story?

First of all, I hope they will enjoy reading it and escape to Triville, a fictitious, small town in the North Carolina Mountains. My mother’s beauty shop inspired the book, which focuses on the Christian people in the community where I grew up. They had best friends, acquaintances and people they kept at a distance. They had disagreements and as in all small towns, they gossiped, but when someone faced a crisis, casseroles went out and prayers went up whether the person in need was a best friend, acquaintance or someone kept at a distance. They were all God’s children. I wanted to bring back that spirit of friendship. I believe it’s needed even more now than when I wrote the book.

What foods do you eat when writing to keep you going?

I sometimes grab a handful of nuts, mostly pecans or walnuts. My daughter mentioned to me that apples were good with peanut butter, so now I eat that when I get stuck on a sentence or paragraph. It gives me a break to ponder the passage while I cut up the apple and makes a good snack.

What do you plan to work on next?

I’m currently writing a cozy mystery that also takes place in the North Carolina Mountains.
